What is PayPay in Japan?
PayPay is a service that allows you to pay for shopping using your smartphone, operated by “PayPay Co., Ltd.” established by Japanese companies SoftBank and Yahoo Japan Corporation. At stores that support PayPay, you can pay with the PayPay app on your smartphone instead of cash.
PayPay does not require the smartphone terminal to support the Osaifu-Keitai function, and anyone can easily use it because payment is made using the QR code or barcode displayed on the application installed on the smartphone. Is a feature. Of course, no usage fee is required. 0.5% of the amount paid will be cashed back!
How to register PayPay
The registration method is very easy. First, download the app on your smartphone.
Next, enter your mobile phone and any password and press “New Registration” / 新規登録(しんきとうろく). After that, you will receive a 4-digit verification number by SMS. Registration is complete when you enter the verification number you received in the app.
If you enter this referral code “04-W2IJ7TF“when registering paypay, you will receive 500 yen worth of points when you make a payment of 1000 yen or more.
How to charge PayPay
Charge the app with money before making a payment. There are three charging methods.
- Deposit from an ATM in 7-Eleven
- Deposit from a bank account
- Deposit from credit card (Yahoo Japan card only)
PayPay is a service that you can use even if you do not have a credit card, so if you do not have a credit card, charge from a 7-Eleven ATM or bank account.
Here, I will tell you how to charge from a 7-Eleven ATM and how to charge from a bank account. This is also easy.
Follow the steps below to charge cash from Seven Bank ATMs. It will also be displayed in English on the ATM.

No change will be given when charging at Seven Bank ATMs. Also, be aware that the app will display a 4-digit number and you must complete the procedure within 10 minutes.

How to use PayPay

There are two types of payment methods at the store.
- Scan payment
How to read the QR code at the cash register, enter the payment amount, and ask the clerk to confirm it. - Code payment
How to display the barcode and have the clerk read it
Which payment method will be used depends on the store, so check when making the payment and tap one of the payment methods at the bottom right of the home screen. As far as I usually use, there are many stores that accept code payment.
How to check cash back

Shops where PayPay can be used
The number of shops where PayPay can be used is increasing. You can use it at any store that has the “PayPay” mark.
- Convenience store
- Supermarket
- Drug store
- Restaurant
- Bookstore
- Department store
- Hotels, travel sites and more.

How to pay residence tax
You can also pay the residence tax by PayPay. If you pay with PayPay, you will get a cashback of several hundred yen, so it is a great deal.

PayPay balance is valid for 2 years
Please note that if two years have passed without any increase or decrease in the balance, even if there is a balance, all of it will be lost and it will not be possible to return it. The last usage date will be displayed near the center of the balance screen by tapping the balance at the bottom of the home screen. Don’t worry if you use the app frequently to pay.

PayPay also runs a 20% return campaign on a regular basis. During the campaign period, the amount of cash back will be higher than usual, so please check the app and the poster in the store. In addition, PayPay allows you to transfer money between PayPay users as well as payment. Since it is a function that can be used in the same way as a bank transfer, it can also be used for remittances.
Compared to using a bank or convenience store to transfer money, there are no fees, so it is attractive to save money. There is an upper limit to the amount of money that can be sent, but there is no limit on the number of times it can be sent, so it is an easy-to-use function.
Want to try PayPay? Please download it from the app store and use it.
